Classic arcade racer fan remake
Out Run is a free racing game from indie developer ZGZ InfiniGames. It's a fan remake of the classic arcade racer of the same name released back in the 1980s. This version introduces several upgrades over the original, including sharper and more vibrant graphics, while retaining that retro pixel look.
Similar to Horizon Chase Turbo, Out Run aims to capture the essence of what made the original's gameplay so popular, which was easy to learn and simple yet engaging. It also comes with customizable controls and difficulty levels, as well as a bunch of new race tracks.
A classic reimagined
By now, most racing game fans have heard of or experienced playing Out Run. Apart from getting ported over to other systems and gaming consoles, though, this cult classic racer never really got the proper sequel many were hoping for. There have been many attempts from various developers to create a spiritual successor of sorts, and this fan remake is one of the more interesting ones out right now.
On the surface, this game looks and feels similar to the original, with some graphical filters added to help boost sharpness and vibrancy, and a retro soundtrack to enhance the experience. Where things get interesting are the completely new race tracks and various difficulty settings to choose from. You can choose from multiple difficulty levels and race against advanced AI-driven cars and traffic behavior to test your skills.
Controls are taken care of by a keyboard/mouse combo, with an option to choose between manual or automatic transmission while driving. However, you can remap the button assignments, or use a third-party controller if you're more comfortable playing that way. Now, do note that the game needs improvement, and there is plenty of content to come and bug fixes to develop.
Next best thing
While the possibility of getting an official sequel for the original is unlikely at this point, you can get the next best thing with this Out Run remake. It takes the base game, refines it a bit, adds its own original tracks, and introduces all kinds of gameplay features in line with modern standards, all while keeping the core experience intact. Try it out now.
